210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel

(B) Other than Dwelling Units. All 15 and 20A, single-phase, 125V receptacles installed in the locations specified below shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.
(1) Bathrooms
(2) Rooftops
(3) Kitchens.

Intent: The significance of this change is that GFCI protection for personnel is required for all 15 and 20A, single-phase, 125V receptacles installed in kitchens, even those that do not supply the counter top surfaces.

Author's Comment: Section 210.8(A)(6) only requires GFCI protection for 15 and 20A, single-phase, 125V receptacles installed to serve counter surfaces for dwelling units, yet 210.8(B)(3) requires all 15 and 20A, single-phase 125V receptacles in kitchens to be GFCI-protected when not in a dwelling unit.
